Psychological Therapy
Psychological therapy is a sensitive, focused conversation that develops clarity and facilitates emotional experience.
At the start of therapy I prioritise supporting you to be clear and secure in your therapeutic decision so that you are able to engage in the emotional experiences required for your psychological change.
I will invite you to observe your inner experience related to your problems. Doing so can trigger some anxiety and I will invite you to pay attention to any anxiety that arises for you, as well as guide you in noticing and taking care of your anxiety. Managing your anxiety appropriately during therapy is the bedrock of doing this work safely and effectively.
We have all learned to cope with life as best we can. Yet, despite our best efforts, some of the ways in which we cope can have negative consequences for ourselves. These ways of coping could also be referred to as defences. I will assist you in noticing your automatic ways of coping and support you in evaluating their helpfulness to you. With care, compassion and respect we will work together to consider other ways of thinking about or approaching your problems, your inner experience, and your relationships with other people.
Improving your anxiety levels and enhancing your coping abilities will provide the basis for finding relief from many forms of distress and psychological or psychiatric symptoms. However, for deep and lasting relief from suffering and symptoms, I will invite you to deepen your engagement with yourself and how you experience people and the world around you. By engaging with yourself in a close way you will become aware of emotions, thoughts, ideas, memories, images, dreams and physical sensations or impulses in your body. Engaging with these inner resources will help you process emotional pain and and achieve a deep and lasting change in your self and a capacity to better manage future difficulties.
